What is henna?

Bridal HennaHenna is the name of a flowering plant or shrub that is native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, southern Asia, Australia and New Zealand. It contains a burgundy dye  particle that binds with protein. The ground henna plant has been used to dye skin, hair, fingernails, leather, silk and wool. It has also been utilized as a dye and preservative for leather and cloth.  In various cultures henna, or mehndi has traditionally been applied to the skin to ornament the body during various festivals, celebrations and ceremonies. It is believed to be very sacred. The tradition dates back to 500 BCE. In modern times the tradition of henna is still in practice and has spread to the north American region.

The dried leaves of the henna plant are ground into a paste, prepared in a special manner, then applied to the skin with an applicator.  The paste can be left on for several hours or overnight.  The stain or “tattoo” can last a few days to a month, depending on how much pigment is in the paste and the amount of time the paste is left on the skin.
